First level professional higher education study programme „NURSING”

The goal of this program  is to coach medical persons of  first level of higher professional education – nurses – by providing acquisition of professional and theoretical skill and developing a responsible and creative personality, in accordance with labour market demands in Latvia and Europe. Another goal is to promote possibilities of growth of nurses in accordance with new technologies and specification of labour market, as well as increase competitive capability of nurses in Latvia and the EU, by promoting acquisition of basic nursing specialities.


Competency of a nurse includes:

Planning and provision of care to patients and their families;

Evaluation of the results of patient care;

Supervision of stationary and out- patients;

Provision of medicine;

Performance of defined diagnostic and medicinal procedures;

Performance of defined surgical procedures;

Specific care and provision of medicinal procedures for children, geriatric patients and patients with mental derangement;

Specific care and provision of medicinal procedures for women in periods of pregnancy, childbirth and post-child-birth period;

Provision of emergency medicinal assistance;

Performance of preventive measures;

Maintaining a safe work environment;

Organization and direction of the work of healthcare group;

Education of patients, society and team members in regard to maintaining, promotion and retaining of health;


3 year (120 CP/180ECTS) study program

First study year (40CP) students master general study courses (25% of CP for the 1st study year)  – Latin, biology and genetics, fortify computer skills and gain understanding of coordination of statistical data,  acquire a course of professional English  – which offers knowledge of generally adopted terminology in the English language. Compulsory study courses (57% of CP for the 1st study year) provide knowledge and understanding in basic areas of medicine  – anatomy, physiology, hygiene and environmental medicine, microbiology and epidemiology, pharmacology, which shapes insight in acquiring professional study courses. Study courses are mastered – general propaedeutic and evaluation of patients, basic needs of a healthy human,  planning of care and documentation,  practical working skills in patient care, which help acquire professional basic knowledge.  Contents of the  Practical working skills in patient care study course are mastered during three semesters. It ensures gradualness principle of knowledge and allows students to acquire clinical procedures and develop practical skills, starting with general care principles and consecutively ensuring acquisition of patient care standards.Optional courses constitute 8%  of credit points for the 1st study year and ensure acquisition of knowledge about philosophy and ethics of nursing profession and care of geriatric patients. Clinical praxis constitutes 10% of credit points for the 1st study year.


Second study year (40CP) study courses ensure development of professional knowledge, proficiency and skills. General study courses (23% of CP for 2nd study year) – general and communication psychology, basics of project development and management, basics of business and financial calculations,  research methods in nursing and sociology.  Compulsory branch theoretical and professional specialization courses (50% of CP for 2nd study year) students learn: – general and special medicinal study courses and patient care,  clinical pharmacology, general pathology and pathologic physiology, as well as practical skills in patient care. 10%  of credit points acquired in the 2nd study year consist of restricted optional and optional study courses. Clinical praxis constitutes 17% of credit points for the 2nd study year.


Third study year (40CP)  students master study courses, that deepen theoretical and professional knowledge, as well as practical skills acquired in previous study courses. Students are provided with qualification praxis, development of qualification paper and state examination. General study courses (5% of CP for the 3rd study year)  – basic principles of pedagogy and education of patients. In compulsory branch theoretical and professional specialization courses (13% of CP for the 3rd study year) students learn – obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency medical assistance and intensive therapy, care for oncologic patients. In restricted optional part (28%  of CP for the 3rd study year)  students acquire courses of special medicinal and care  courses, including patient care in psychiatry,  care for LOR patients, care for patients suffering from infections, as well as a study course in prevention medicine and rehabilitation, etc. Praxis constitutes 30% of credit points for the 2nd study year.


Students have the opportunity to take optional study courses in business etiquette, stress management, massage, etc., gaining a total of 4 CP. Medicinal department has a long-standing collaboration with Centre of physical medicine and cosmetology, which provides students with a possibility to master a classical massage course, acquiring a licence to perform this massage method.
